The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has dismantled a large-scale methamphetamine production facility hidden in a forest in Oyo State and arrested five suspected members of a transnational drug cartel, including a Mexican national.

Speaking in Abuja on Wednesday, NDLEA Chairman, Brig.-Gen. Buba Marwa (Rtd.), described the operation as a major breakthrough in the agency’s ongoing fight against illicit drug production and trafficking.

According to Marwa, the clandestine laboratory was located deep within Tapa Village in Ibarapa North Local Government Area of Oyo State and was allegedly operated by a Nigerian-Mexican drug syndicate.

He disclosed that NDLEA operatives stormed the facility on June 17 following intelligence reports and successfully apprehended five suspects, including a 56-year-old Mexican believed to be the cartel’s methamphetamine production expert and four Nigerian collaborators.

Marwa said the arrest highlighted the growing international dimension of drug trafficking operations in Nigeria and demonstrated the agency’s ability to detect and disrupt sophisticated criminal networks.

A forensic team later examined the facility and discovered large quantities of chemicals and equipment used in the production of methamphetamine. Recovered items included controlled chemical substances, industrial drums containing various precursor materials, acids, catalysts and other ingredients commonly used in synthetic drug manufacturing.

The agency also recovered industrial processing equipment, including a reactor pot, distillation units, mixers, condensers and drying machines used in the production process.

Preliminary tests conducted on substances recovered from the site confirmed the presence of methamphetamine, while additional samples tested positive for chemicals used in the synthesis of the illicit drug.

Marwa described the operation as the interception of a multibillion-naira drug production enterprise that could have supplied millions of doses of narcotics to local and international markets.

He noted that the discovery came just weeks after a similar methamphetamine laboratory was dismantled in Ogun State, raising concerns about attempts by drug traffickers to establish the South-West region as a hub for synthetic drug production.

The NDLEA chairman warned drug cartels that the agency would continue to pursue and dismantle their operations regardless of where they are located.

He commended officers involved in the raid for their professionalism and bravery and thanked members of the public for providing useful information that contributed to the success of the operation.

Chairman/Chief Executive of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Brig. Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa says premarital drug test is a key factor in attaining a stable home.

According to a statement by the agency’s spokesman, Femi Babafemi, the NDLEA boss spoke at a conference organized by an NGO, Coal to Diamond Support Network for young adults on Saturday in Abuja.

He said “if would-be couples choose to undergo HIV and genotype tests before marriage without any law compelling them, then, they should equally consider drug tests as critical to their well-being and stability of their home”.

While warning on the dire consequences of drug abuse, Gen. Marwa who was represented by a Principal Staff Officer on Drug Demand Reduction in the NDLEA, Shehu Dankolo, said substance use does not only destroy marriages but equally leads to health problems, morbidity, injuries, violence, and death.

He added that most often, the physical, psychological and social consequences of drug use are very obvious and disturbing.

According to him, the mental, physical and spiritual quality of life of individuals has definite impact on a society’s future.

In her remarks, the wife of the NDLEA boss, Munirat Marwa who was the host of the event, urged youths preparing for weddings to take a drug test as part of their preparations, adding that there is a difference between wedding and marriage.

“The wedding as we all know it is a short time event while marriage is intended for a lifetime,” she said.

“As such, the conference has come at the right time when couples are putting more importance and emphasis on the wedding festivities rather than the marriage itself.

“It is therefore important we pay attention to preparing for the marriage and one of such ways is through premarital counseling and drug test. This prepares the couples very well and has the ability to reduce domestic violence, divorce as well as increase happiness and longevity in marriages’”.

Other notable speakers at the conference include wife of former Vice President Namadi Sambo, Amina Namadi Sambo; President of the Group, Bilkisu Mohammed and the keynote speaker, Said Takuma who all emphasized the need for proper counseling for would-be couples to safeguard their marriages and future.

This is according to a statement by the spokesman of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Femi Babafemi.<ins class="adsbygoogle adsbygoogle-noablate" data-ad-format="auto" data-ad-client="ca-pub-4674021264317253" data-adsbygoogle-status="done" data-ad-status="unfilled"><ins id="aswift_3_expand" tabindex="0" title="Advertisement" aria-label="Advertisement"><ins id="aswift_3_anchor"></ins></ins></ins>

In its communique, the NDLEA said the suspect serving with a government agency in Abuja was arrested on Saturday 28th August, 2021 following the interception of a consignment at the warehouse of a transport company.

Borno State was not left out, as one Caleb Okezuonu was arrested with 352 bottles of Codeine Syrup and 876 tablets of Rohypnol during a raid.

“Curiously, Caleb is on court bail, for two earlier charges filed against him by the state command of the NDLEA. The latest arrest makes it his third arrest for drug offences,” the agency’s spokesperson remarked.

Marwa disclosed this to state house correspondents on Friday, after briefing President Muhammadu Buhari on the activities of the agency at the presidential villa in Abuja.

The NDLEA boss said the building of barracks for operatives of the agency is par of efforts to protect officers and their families.

“I raised the issue of barracks. The NDLEA has been in existence for 32 years. All other agencies — armed forces, police, customs, immigration, road safety — all have estates and barracks, except the NDLEA; we still don’t have barracks,” he said.

“And now, considering the hazardous nature of the work that we do — the dangers in it — we arrest and jail the criminals and then live among them.

“When you send operatives to go into the forest, to go after the criminals, they will be encouraged if they know that their own families are secured in a barracks somewhere.

“So, clearly, we got a positive response from the commander-in-chief and we are very grateful for it, and we look forward to the execution as soon as it is practicable.

“Another thing we talked about was the issue of recruitment, considering the size and responsibilities before us, and we also again received a listening ear. We are very grateful.”

On the activities of the agency, the NDLEA chairman disclosed that the agency had seized illicit drugs worth over N100 billion, while cash recovered has been deposited with the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).

“As far as activities in the drug supply reduction sphere are concerned, we have seized drugs worth billions of naira — over N100 billion. The cash has been sent to the Central Bank and for the drugs, we have sought forfeiture from the courts for destruction,” he said.

“Since January, we have jailed 1,630 of these shameless criminals and murderers who traffic drugs. We have counselled and rehabilitated over 4,000 within our NDLEA facilities.

“The issues of the war against drug abuse cascade down to communities. So, I briefed the president on the advocacy work that we’re doing across the country.’’

The NDLEA boss also urged those who abuse drugs to desist from their actions.

“The last message here to Nigerians is to say no to drugs. If you have not started taking drugs, don’t; if you have started, stop it; if you’re addicted, seek treatment. There’s no shame or stigma; go and get treated,” Marwa said.

“If you have malaria, you go to the hospital; if you have diabetes, you are not ashamed. So, drug addiction is a disease like the others. I urge those who are addicted to start going for treatment.”

Operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) had traced the wanted drug dealer, Stephen Afam Ikeanyionwu, on August 15, 2021, to a popular pentecostal church at Mike Ajari street, Ojodu Berger, where they arrested him soon after he stepped out of the church service.

His arrest, according to NDLEA spokesman, Femi Babafemi,* followed the interception of a consignment of illicit drugs weighing 69.65kg going to the UK through the Lagos airport on August 12, 2021.

The illegal baggage had been sent to the airport for export through a freight forwarding company, which in turn gave a driver to deliver at the NAHCO export shed. Following the arrest of the driver, follow up operations and investigations later revealed the true identity of the actual owner of the consignment, Stephen Afam Ikeanyionwu, who was arrested three days later in a string operation.

Also at the Lagos airport, NDLEA operatives arrested an Italy-bound passenger, Abibu Miminu, during the outward clearance of passengers on Ethiopian Airways flight to Italy via Addis-Ababa for ingesting illicit drugs.

While under observation at the Agency’s facility between Saturday 14th and Sunday, August 15, 2021, the trafficker excreted 68 wraps of heroin in three excretions, all weighing 800grams.

In the same vein, narcotic officers of the Directorate of Operation and General Investigation have intercepted at two courier companies in Lagos, 840 grams of Methamphetamine going to Australia and concealed in bolts; 340 grams of Meth hidden in locally made footwears and also going to Australia; 1kilogram of cocaine coming from Ghana with the UK as destination and concealed in four local guitars.

Also seized from one of the courier firms is another 480grams of Meth concealed in footwear and going to Australia.

Meanwhile, a South Africa returnee, Obi Chigozie Samuel, was also last Sunday arrested at the Lagos airport during the inward clearance of Ethiopian Airlines from Addis-Abbaba, for importing 58grams of skunk into Nigeria.

During the preliminary interview, Babafemi said, he admitted ownership and claimed to be a cannabis smoker.

In strings of operations in Edo, Ondo, Kaduna, Kano and Kogi states, at least 2,504.8 kilograms of diverse illicit drugs were seized from multiple suspects in the past week. In Kogi, 60-year-old Mrs Comfort Uzor was arrested with 62.1kg cannabis on August 17, 2021, in Lokoja, where one Dayyabu Usman was also caught with 8kg of the same substance.

While Uzor sourced hers from Bolorunduro in Ondo state and was heading to Abuja, Usman got his from Lagos and was taking it to Kano for sale.

In Kaduna State, operatives of the Birnin Gwari Area Command of the Agency raided the home of one Mr Joseph Sunday at Ungwa Pama, Kaduna where they recovered 48.3kg of cannabis from his room following credible intelligence, while in Edo state, NDLEA officers on 17th August stormed the Ugbuwe forest in Ovia North East LGA, where they seized146 bags of cannabis Sativa weighing 2,044 kilograms.

Also arrested on Saturday was Ibrahim Umaru in the Sabo area of Akure South LGA and different quantities of psychotropic substances like Diazepam, Tramadol, Swinol and Rophynol were recovered from him.

Reacting to the strings of arrests and seizures in the past week across some states and the MMIA, Chairman/Chief Executive of NDLEA, Brig-Gen Mohamed Buba Marwa (Retd,) commended the officers and men of the various commands for their unrelenting commitment to the presidential mandate to clear Nigerian forests and communities of illicit drugs in whatever form.

A 36-year-old lady, Chioma Afam, who uses multiple identities and wears hijab to evade security scrutiny has been arrested by operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) in Benue State.

She was arrested along with her partner, Peace Chidinma Caleb, for trying to smuggle 296,000 tablets of Diazepam and Exol-5 from Onitsha, Anambra State to Gombe State.

Chioma who uses multiple names, such as Amina, Uzoamaka and Ifunaya to cover her criminal activities was arrested last Saturday, along with the 22-year-old Peace Chidinma Caleb who also wears hijab as a cover for her nefarious activities during routine checks and profiling of inward vehicles into Makurdi, the Benue State capital.

Their vehicle coming from Onitsha, Anambra state, the Director, Media and Advocacy of the NDLEA, Femi Babafemi said, was intercepted along Makurdi – Alliade road while heading to Gombe State via Makurdi.

A search of their vehicle led to the discovery of 43kilograms of Diazepam and 33kg of Exol-5, both weighing 76 kilograms with a total of 296,000 tablets packed in four large ‘Ghana must go’ bags.

Meanwhile, the Ondo State Command of the Agency, on Sunday, intercepted one Olu Ameh, a commercial motorcycle rider with 465 kilograms of Cannabis Sativa along Ijagba-Ute road in Ose local government area of the state.

The illicit substance was said to have been bought from one Joseph in Ago-Akure, Akure North LGA and being conveyed to the buyer, a certain Egbonwon at Ijagba village in Ose LGA.

The Chairman/Chief Executive of the NDLEA, Gen Buba Marwa (Rtd), while reacting to the two seizures and arrests, commended the commanders, officers and men of the Benue and Ondo State Commands of the Agency for their efforts in ensuring that no illicit substance is allowed to pass through their areas of responsibility under whatever guise or cover.

“For us in NDLEA, a kilogram of illicit drug seized by our officers across the country is a kilogram less what is available on the streets and in our communities and that is why we will continue to encourage all our officers and men to continue to give their best in pursuit of the mandate given to us by President Muhammadu Buhari, ” Gen. Marwa stated.
